Clean Development Mechanism
Kyoto Protocol
The "Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ".
is an amendment to the international treaty on climate change, assigning mandatory targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to signatory nations. The objective is the "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.
The protocol proposed three mechanisms to enable countries, which had target reductions, to meet their commitments.

- Clean Development Mechanism
- Joint Implementation
- Emission Trading
Clean Development MechanismThe Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the two project-based flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. These mechanisms are designed to make it easier and cheaper for industrialized countries to meet the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets that they agreed to under the Protocol.
CDM Journey of Enercon
The Management Committee of Enercon set out the CDM initiative in 2000 and since then monitored the progress of the CDM initiative. In late 2001, Government of Netherlands came out with the CERUPT Tender. Enercon participated in CERUPT tender by offering +15MW wind farm projects and was selected under the tender. Enercon was not able to conclude the contract with CERUPT and the +15 MW projects were subsequently cancelled. However, this provided Enercon with a considerable experience in the CDM process. Enercon at present has nine projects of 444MW at the validation stage and other eight projects are in pipeline.
Bundling of the Projects
Enercon follows the unique concept of bundling the projects into one activity, which results in economic viability for the small projects. Enercon registered its two projects of 58.2 MW in Rajasthan and 16 MW in Karnataka under large-scale activity. Enercon has successfully transferred the first transaction of the CERs to the buyer. These two projects of Enercon were first in India to be registered under the large-scale activity.

Benefits to the Customer
- Large customers can benefit from the experience of Enercon in doing the CDM projects. Enercon provides the complete solution to the customers from registration to verification to sale of CERs to realization of the revenues.
- Small customers can avail the benefits of CDM through bundling to realize the revenues from CDM with less cost.
- Enercon features in the preferred list of the international buyers (JCF, IFC, KFW, Deutsche Bank and Rabo Bank) and hence is able to get the better values for its CERs.
- Enercon has a good set of wind projects across various states in India, which acts as a hedge for the Buyer for successful delivery of the CERs.
