How did you become interested in wind energy?
- Growing up in the windy North of Germany, I could experience the power of wind already during my teenage time. With the oil crisis in the middle of the 70s I became interested in Renewable Energies. In 1975 I built my first wind turbine – a very small one with only 22 kW. However, I realized quickly that a lot of energy could be generated from the wind - I only had to develop the right technology.
What were the key challenges faced by Enercon GmbH ever since it started its operations?
- One of the challenges was – and still is - “growing up” from a small company with only
one production facility and a limited number of customers to an internationally acting enterprise with several factories and a large number of projects all over the world. The other challenges were the radical changes in technology when we started with the gearless design in 1994 and the new rotor blade design for all turbines of the ENERCON product family in 2002/2003. Such changes require a high investment and a lot of trust from the customers and there is not much room for mistakes.
How is Enercon GmbH different from other Wind Energy Players?
- We are mainly different from the competitors in three sectors: Technology, service and company structure. Our turbines work without a gearbox; we develop and produce all main turbine components like generator, blades, towers and grid connection devices ourselves. From the beginning we have had our focus on good and reliable service, maintenance for our turbines and thus a long-term partnership with our customers. Our service technicians are trained in-house and India, with its high-level Training Academy, has set standards in this! Also our company structure is different: ENERCON is privately owned; all others are limited companies, which are listed on the stock exchange. Independent of stock values and in analyst opinions, ENERCON can follow its long-term targets and take its time to sufficiently test new technologies before bringing it to the market.
How would you describe 10 years of Enercon (India) Ltd.?
- 10 years of ENERCON (India) have been very interesting and also very successful. They were characterized by the effort of bringing together the different mentalities of our teams and learning about the Indian market and its specialties. I think that we are well-prepared for the next 10 years!
What is it that is special you found about Enercon (India) Ltd.?
- Our Indian colleagues do a wonderful job and I admire their dedication to what they do. ENERCON (India) today offers complete solutions in the wind energy sector, which reaches from site identification, wind farm design to commissioning and after-sales service. The customers of ENERCON (India) expect and get a full-service package with regards to service and maintenance. Not an easy job taking into account the large distances in India! The Indian Service department is structured accordingly and well deserves the customer’s satisfaction.Special about India is also its enormous potential, which is being estimated to be 45.000 MW. I think that in the next 10 years between 10.000 and 15.000 MW are realistically possible if the Political framework conditions remain stable. As India is - according to my knowledge - the only Country in the world with a Ministry for Renewable Energies, it seems very likely, that this will be the case.
