In Conversation with our MD, Mr. Yogesh Mehra
What potential do you see in the field of renewable energy in India and how much the wind energy sector is geared up to tap this potential?
- Renewable energy in India is only just taking off. The potential for renewable energy such as wind, solar, bio-mass, mini hydro is phenomenal and I would say that it definitely is equivalent to the so called “Conventional Source” of energy if not more. The greatest positive feature of the same being is that it is inexhaustible as compared to the so-called “Conventional Energy” which is going to come to an end sooner or later.
- In terms of wind energy, the estimated potential as has been assumed by the Ministry of Non Conventional Sources is 45000 MW’s in India. I personally feel that this potential, mapped a couple of years ago, was based on certain criteria, which according to me is outdated today, as technology has developed rapidly in the last few years and there is a huge unmapped wind potential which still exists in our country today. My personal estimate is that we have in India a tapable potential of a minimum of 100,000 MW’s of Wind Energy and all that is on shore!
Looking at the 10-year journey of EIL, where do you see the organization now?
- The ten-year journey for EIL has been a very challenging and exciting one; during this journey we have been able to create a platform for EIL in terms of the requisite infrastructure that would be required for any organization to take off! We have done well in terms of building up a very competent team, putting into place systems, which can help EIL to really now grow. As I would love to say that the first 10 years of EIL have been equivalent to the “Warm up lap” as in a Formula One Race, and the actual race for EIL only now begins!.
- To put into context what I mean I would like to mention here that effectively the total “MW” capacity that was set up by EIL in India in the first 10 years, EIL’s plans in the Financial Year 2006-2007 are targeting to achieve at least 75% of that what was achieved in 10 years to be done in a single year alone! I feel we are well positioned to win the race as we move forward.
What are the major strengths and weaknesses of EIL?
- The major strengths of EIL are - it’s “Competent team”, it’s “Cutting Edge Technology”, and it’s “Constant Pursuit of Excellence on all fronts”.
- Major weakness for EIL today, I see the same are: -Since the area of operation of EIL is a very complex one, which calls for “Meticulous Planning” and “Superb Coordination”, I see these two areas, that are going to be under maximum stress, as we go forward with our massive growth plans. I would not call this as weaknesses, but I would call these as areas that would come under maximum pressure to ensure that while we grow we are still able to deliver!
Now when Enercon is spreading its winds overseas, what role for EIL is envisaged in areas like Global Supply Chain, Technology, R&D, etc.?
- As we spread our wings overseas in terms of sourcing, in terms of development of projects abroad, of course we will have to ensure that we follow World-class systems to remain competitive. We have already implemented SAP, which is one of the world’s best “ERP platforms” for our operations. We are well placed in terms of having continuous access to the latest and ‘State of the Art Enercon Technology” and with the strong emphasis on research and development that Enercon pursues, we are confident that we will maintain our lead on technological developments. With the emphasis in Enercon (India) Ltd. on training and competency building of the Energites, we feel we should be well equipped to spread our wings and for us to succeed!
The immediate priorities you would like Enercon to focus on?
The immediate priorities that I would like EIL to focus on are:-
- Continued Building of “Competent Teams”.
- Emphasis on putting into places strong “Systems”.
- Benchmarking Enercon India’s operations on the technology and financial front with the best in the industry.
What is your dream organization and how far Enercon is from that?
- I try to live my dream every single day and Enercon is my dream, which I am fortunate to live everyday! Of course, we have a long way to go, to be able to fulfill the dream! I would like to use a few phrases, which constitute a part of the dream - “Enercon has to be a Trust-Worthy, Fast, Well Co-ordinate, Customer Responsive, Leading Edge Technology user, Innovative, and most of all should be a Great Team”!
